ROCK MUSIC AND POLITICS – FAT WHITES
REVIEW OF ‘THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER’
collection of stuff we think is cool/informative – tell us if you wanna add something to it, you can see how lame the descriptions are so write a sentence and we’ll #post it. contents = general stuff, then scroll down for feminist stuff
GENERAL LITERATURE
- Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell; as a tramp in 1930s Paris slums and then English spikes, Orwell’s memoirs are ever-relevant, v. insightful and are informal, rather than intimidating
- Essays in Love by Alain De Botton; coz who doesn’t love love (it’s philosophical thoughts on a love affair and isn’t that annoying/pretentious – and is sometimes funny)
- Unpopular Essays by Bertrand Russell; this guy is seriously liberal, was a CND advocate when he was rlly old and all round legend tbh (these are short/interesting/inspiring w/o being irritating)
- Nausea by Jean-Paul Sartre; I’m not going to lie to you Sartre is annoying but this book is kind of indescribable – it’s existential and sort of confusing but makes you think about loads of stuff like life and death 🙂 and is set in 1930s France !
- Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – Hunter S Thompson (kinda autobiographical, cool 60s drug experiences + super funny: seriously recommend this)
‘a savage journey into the heart of the american dream‘ but it’s mostly nonsensical n w nothimg really happening bc there’s always stuff happening so no story line I guess ((in a good way)) tho it gets a lil deep right at the end I suppose - We by Yevgemy Zamyatin – the original, Russian 1984 (Orwell stole bare stuff from here) def worth a read

FEMINIST LITERATURE:
- The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P by Adelle Waldman
- Eat My Heart Out by Zoe Pilger
These short-ish novels are a perfect pair in a minor genre ‘Feminist Fiction of 2014’. Both novels are romantic and humorous as opposed to mantras or rants, bringing up feminism from unique angles. Pilger looks at inter-generational feminism and in many ways debates the importance of many old feminist values whilst Waldman views women through the eyes of a male who regards himself as liberal and progressive. Waldman brings up stark gender inequalities that are underplayed despite being a part of everyday life. Pilger studies the multi-sided struggles of a young woman and how feminist ideology alters her actions. These are chick-lits of the highest order.
