ROCK MUSIC AND POLITICS – FAT WHITES

REVIEW OF ‘THINGS CAN ONLY GET BETTER’

WHY YOU NEED TO READ: MAUS

collection of stuff we think is cool/informative – tell us if you wanna add something to it, you can see how lame the descriptions are so write a sentence and we’ll #post it. contents = general stuff, then scroll down for feminist stuff

GENERAL LITERATURE

  • Down and Out in Paris and London by George Orwell; as a tramp in 1930s Paris slums and then English spikes, Orwell’s memoirs are ever-relevant, v. insightful and are informal, rather than intimidating
  • Essays in Love by Alain De Botton; coz who doesn’t love love (it’s philosophical thoughts on a love affair and isn’t that annoying/pretentious – and is sometimes funny)
  • Unpopular Essays by Bertrand Russell; this guy is seriously liberal, was a CND advocate when he was rlly old and all round legend tbh (these are short/interesting/inspiring w/o being irritating)
  • Nausea by Jean-Paul Sartre; I’m not going to lie to you Sartre is annoying but this book is kind of indescribable – it’s existential and sort of confusing but makes you think about loads of stuff like life and death 🙂 and is set in 1930s France !
  • Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas – Hunter S Thompson (kinda autobiographical, cool 60s drug experiences + super funny: seriously recommend this) ‘a savage journey into the heart of the american dream‘ but it’s mostly nonsensical n w nothimg really happening bc there’s always stuff happening so no story line I guess ((in a good way)) tho it gets a lil deep right at the end I suppose
  • We by Yevgemy Zamyatin – the original, Russian 1984 (Orwell stole bare stuff from here) def worth a read

GENERAL MULTI-MEDIA

music –

  • Tim Minchin – politics/humour = summed up in Prejudice
  • Sleaford Mods – feat. the bitterest guy in the music industry but his opinions are great
  • Billy Bragg – the politics is good, the music is debatable: make ur own mind up
  • Kate Tempest obv
  • Bob Dylan – like him or hate him (I hate him superficially) his music is definitely politicalifika (that’s a quote)

articles –

TV/documentaries –

  • Into The Commons on BBC iPlayer; exposes the totally ridiculous system that governs us: The House of Commons
  • Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe on BBC iPlayer – really good satire, i LOL and i don’t even like LOL-ing
  • Question Time on BBC iPlayer (#beef)
  • The Super Rich and Us on BBC iPlayer; makes U angry
  • The History of Modern Britain by Andrew Marr (genuinely good/not dull + you can laugh at his outfits)
  • Revolution Presents: Democracy Dealers on BBC iPlayer feat Heydon and Jolyon (urgh)
  • The Big Question on BBC every Sunday, gets totally heated plus is normally thought provoking
  • An Idiot’s Guide to Politics – on BBC presented by Jolyon Rubenstein
  • Socialism vs Capitalism with Owen Jones and Dan Hodges; just 7 mins long but great
  • Russell Brand and Owen Jones talk on REVOLUTION
  • The Politics of Food feat Jack Monroe
  • The What’s Underneath Project – quite weird but a really clever idea and probably quite important (basically women talking about their sense of self worth/experience/body image worries while undressing)
  • Raised by Wolves NEW SERIES based on Caitlin Moran’s upbringing – on BBC iPlayer
  • Free Speech on iPlayer, they have really good debates. (i think it’s hosted by rick edwards, if u like him) eg with Ed Miliband
  • The Wire – the beST TV show ever invented – tells you a hell of a lot about America in the early 2000s and today as well; a serious and commendable illustration of the futility of the drug trade and the bleakness of prospects for the working class in urban America (Baltimore in this case) really clever – and funny too

FEMINIST LITERATURE:

  • The Love Affairs of Nathaniel P by Adelle Waldman
  • Eat My Heart Out by Zoe Pilger

These short-ish novels are a perfect pair in a minor genre ‘Feminist Fiction of 2014’. Both novels are romantic and humorous as opposed to mantras or rants, bringing up feminism from unique angles. Pilger looks at inter-generational feminism and in many ways debates the importance of many old feminist values whilst Waldman views women through the eyes of a male who regards himself as liberal and progressive. Waldman brings up stark gender inequalities that are underplayed despite being a part of everyday life. Pilger studies the multi-sided struggles of a young woman and how feminist ideology alters her actions. These are chick-lits of the highest order.

FEMINIST MULTI-MEDIA:

listen to –

  • Bikini Kill (1990s feminist punk rock band headed by Kathleen Hanna)
  • The Julie Ruin (Hanna’s most recent band)
  • Kate Nash’s latest stuff (especially her cover of Fidlar’s Cocaine – which becomes Girl Gang)
  • Lily Allen
  • Elastica (not sure they’re feminists but it’s so rare to have female dominated bands that they stand out as kool)
  • Skinny Girl Diet who are singing aggressive music in leary East End pubs even tho #haters gonna hate
  • A.dot – Amplify Dot, rapper who sings about vaginas!!!
  • Wolf Alice (#rockband fronted by a girl in 2015 – real)

watch –

  • The Punk Singer (Kathleen Hanna documentary)
  • Girls – by Lena Dunham who is also pretty inspiring
  • The Mindy Project (on 4od)

online –

  • Everyday Sexism Project (started by Laura Bates)
  • NoMorePageThree
  • Rookie Mag (NOTE: this is not a feminist magazine – fact stated by Tavi Gevinson – but it was created for girls hence the decision to leave this suggestion here. on further thought, possibly that decision was sexist. but i cba to c+p sorry)

people –

  • Hadley Freeman for americanisms, feminisms, neopotisms, capitalisms, celebisms – tackles lots from ‘girly’ perspective yet remains cynical. sometimes mocks brits :/
  • FKA Twigs
  • Caitlin Moran – couldn’t leave her off list despite ickiness (sends children 2 private skl despite publicly aggressively attacking indep. skls) but has good ideas and a brilliant writing style
  • Slutever (debatable) (questionable) (intriguing)
  • Angela Eagle MP
  • Justine Frischmann – I’m not totally sure she’s a feminist but she’s just a cool inspo (and way better than Damon Albarn)
  • Janeane Garafalo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Yvette Cooper (a little bit) *working mum* *legend*
